SPHENE GEMSTONES
Sphene, sometimes is called Titanite because of its titanium content. It is a brilliant gemstone, rivaling diamond with its fire and brilliance. It has a refractive index of 1.90 to 2.034. Sphene is a relatively soft gemstone and is best used in earrings, pendants or brooches. Its rating on the Mohs Scale of Hardness is 5.0-5.5. Its color ranges from yellowish green, green or brown with unique color shades and sometimes color changes, depending on the light source. Sphene has a wedge shaped crystal and actually derives its name from the Greek word for " wedge". Heating has been used to change the color of Sphene to orange or red.
