Zircon is a brilliant, natural gemstone whose reputation has suffered because of confusion with the diamond simulant, cubic zirconia. Blue zircon is the official birthstone for December. Other colors of zircon gemstones are brown, red, yellow, green, black and colorless (which makes a terrific natural diamond simulant). The hardness of zircon is 7.5 on the mohs scale. The refractive index of zircon is high, 1.92 to 2.01 with a tetragonal crystal system. Zircon gemstones are found in Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Ontario and the U.S.A..
